The Wet Coast

As I mentioned in an earlier post the West coast of Vancouver Island gets lots of rain and everything is lush and green with growth. Here are a few photos to show you.
Central Vancouver Island Logging Country

A typical wet meadow habitat where Black Bear and Elk frolic, drink and browse. A blurry photo shot through the moving coach's window

Moss Cottage, Sooke.
We were fortunate to have as our guide a well-informed gentleman called Gregg who knew the rain forest inside out; he was a logger, naturalist, and historian; knew all about black bears,(he had shot two), elk, and trees, and everything in between. We actually were able to see a fine elk which was near the road browsing on the grass on the verges. It is amazing how the forest is so full of all kinds of life, from microbes, insects, invertebrates, salamanders; birds, and large mammals, and so on; a cascade of life, each layer of life feeding on or dependent on the next.

I don't like too much rain but the nature is fantastic.

Lovely old cottage - more or less the same age as Saltaire but couldn't be more different (apart from the rain!)

I wonder why modern buildings are seldom so aesthetically pleasing as older ones such as this. Moss Cottage looks charming and although the notice says that it is named after the family, it seems appropriate that the roof is covered in moss.

Such wonderful words to accompany these glorious scenes! This is MY kind of place :) So beautiful...and what a charming cottage, now all the vogue with its "green" roof. Thank you very much indeed for taking me along on this memorable journey.
