All Hallows E'en

For All the Saints, who from their Labours Rest.....

I think the electric ghosts have been here!

Some good Pumpkin Carvings

Here they come!

Watch out!

And again I say, Watch Out!

The Very Best Witch!
All Hallows is another name for All Saints Day, which is the first of November, and Hallowe'en is the evening before. All Hallows is also the name of a village in Kent, named after its church. Tomorrow then we honour all those saints who have gone before us. This evening we watch as they rise from their graves and scare the living daylights out of us. A stroll around the district brings these images to light....Enjoy! and take fright!

Things seen and unseen

Winter is come already with its dark nights

A Dark Horse

At least their faces are white!

This young lady had better find the gate before it gets dark! She is on the side of the road!

Wild Ram just made it across the road.
Driving at night is hazardous. Being dark we cannot see so well. When it rains, our fancy new blacktop  roads reflect lights and obscure our vision even more. So we should go slower. Near here a fifteen year old girl was killed by a truck. There were no street lights. There was no sidewalk. She was wearing dark clothes. She was walking away from the traffic. It was very dark and rainy. If she had had reflective clothing, and had been walking towards the traffic, she might be still alive. The results: a death; a forever shaken driver; who got a fine of $1000 and was prohibited from driving at night. I don't think this is fair. The judge should have recommended all pedestrians wear reflective clothing, walk towards traffic, and street lights and sidewalks be provided whenever possible. This was an accidental death which was indeed preventable. Blame should have been placed where it belonged. What do you think?

Keremeos Transformations

Carving at Keremeos Municipal Building

Xeriscape

David's Fruits and Vegetables

Fruit Trees Transforming

Bull  with Fall Tree
Our most recent visit to Keremeos was to replenish our fruit stocks at David's Fruit Stall. Along the way we had a bit of rain, and some great photo ops. Yesterday we had our first sight of snow on top of Apex Mountain, which can be seen from our window. It is already snowing in the Rockies.
We are entering a time of change, transformations are taking place everywhere. We had a transformational experience last evening at the first symphony concert of the season, with butterflies changing into tropical storms (by Randolph Peters) and Beethoven's wonderful 6th Symphony , also with thunder and lightning.
We are into a changing weather pattern. Today it is 0 Celsius for the first time since last winter. I also downloaded a book by the now famous Hilary Mantel, called "A Change of Climate".
New technology is replacing the old. We now have Windows 8 and the touch screen Surface tablet upon us. Whatever happened to the poor old laptop? And so we are being slowly transformed into our future selves, hopefully better than the old!

Penticton in Red

Athens Creek Towers with Red Maple

Ornamental Oak

Hanne with Red Tree ? Ash

Red Leaves, Green Grass
Athens Creek Lodge Fire bushes etc
A number of trees are blazing red just now in Penticton. The fallen leaves are red on the green grass and in the gutters. Very colourful, even though the sun didn't shine...Many are oak trees, and a new hazard is spraining one's ankle sliding on the acorns that litter the sidewalks. The ornamental fire bushes are in flames too....

Good Mates
It is Thanksgiving time again here in Canada, when we celebrate all the good things in life, good weather, good food, and good friends. A long time ago Martin Luther gave thanks for his daily bread. Interestingly, he interpreted this as everything needed for life; food and clothing, home and property, work and income, a devoted family, an orderly community, good government, favourable weather, peace and health, a good name, and true friends and neighbours. Not a bad list! Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Enjoy your harvest festival! and "Give us this day, our daily bread"....

Black Diamond

George Nielsen, Danish Baker, Black Diamond Alberta

Some of his wares

The Pretzel, sign of all Danish Bakeries

More Hay for More Beef

Old Store Black Diamond

I think Alan would like this store
We had an interesting visit to Black Diamond recently. A town in Alberta whose economy was originally based on oil, hence the name. We met the Danish Baker there, George Nielsen, who is willing to ship his bread and cakes by Greyhound Bus anywhere in Canada. We had a nice lunch there, with homemade soup and delicious bread, followed by egg on toast. Then Hanne wandered off and found a Bohemian Clothing Store, whilst I took photos.....
We came away from Black Diamond needless to say with a full complement of Danish Baking for our stay in the cabin at Pigeon Lake. Sorry, no potatoes...
Oh by the way, a blog by Damian Carrington in the Guardian says that all the Arctic Ice will be gone by 2030, meaning the end of our world as we know it. It is ironic that then arctic exploration for more oil will be even easier! He titles his blog "Planet Earth's white flag of surrender" A good short read.
