Canyon View Trestle Bridge

Trout Creek Bridge

Walking the Trestle

View from the Canyon View Trestle

We explored the Summerland Trestle Railway Bridge for the first time yesterday. It is confusing because it is also called the Trout Creek Bridge as it spans that creek. It was of course built for the Kettle Valley Railway, which still runs locally in Summerland for tourists in the summertime. It is also a popular walkway and cycle track, restored from 1982-2002 by one Mark Ricciardi.

Breathtaking scenery. I rather like the idea of the trains sharing the bridge with pedestrians and cyclists although one hopes you can see the trains coming from some distance in order to avoid close encounters of the first kind.

It is a bit scary walking a bicycle across that bridge.

I feel compelled to let you know that the trestle was not improved by Mark Ricciardi from 1982-2002, rather those are the dates of his life. Mark was my younger brother who lost his life at 20 years old in 2002 when he accidentally fell from the trestle. The subsequent safety improvements to the trestle are the result of my parents, Elio and Maggie Ricciardi, spearheading a committee who worked and fundraised for two years until the grand reopening on the second anniversary of Mark's death. The plaque you must have gotten your information from was put up in Mark's memory.

A beautiful trestle and splendid to walk or cycle across. I am so sorry for the Ricciardi's sad loss of their son Mark but I deeply respect there commitment to make it safe for others.
