Freedom at last!

Bertie our in-house Cockerel
A recent report in the Guardian Weekly tells the story of a hen called "Liberty" who lived in an egg-laying battery, has now been given a new home on an open free-range farm. She can now spread her wings! It is because the EU has banned battery cages as of the first of January. Liberty is supposed to be the very last hen to be released in the UK. When our in-house cockerel "Bertie" read the story he became so excited the noise around here is deafening with all those cock-a-doodle-doos and such. He immediately started packing as he is determined to escape to freedom himself....

I never got to meet Bertie. If he lives here at THE Lodge, he really does not have reason to 'escape' unless he is going on a tour. He is a fine looking cockerel.

Bertie looks nice but this is a strange article. How do you come to these ideas?

Bertie is a very fine specimen. Dad's next door neighbour has a cockerel. Personally, I like to hear him crowing, but I don't have to listen at the crack of dawn. Dad has no problems with it, but the lady on the other side...

Apparently he has already booked tickets to England so he must have his reasons. Then he probably will go to New Zealand to see our daughter....

How do I come to these ideas? It was Bertie who found the picture of Liberty in the paper, and he told me about it....

Apparently a cockerel is defined as a domestic cock less than one year old....
